Wildlife Sanctuary & National Park of Jharkhand

Jharkhand is bestowed with large variety of wildlife. The state provides a panoramic view of a wide variety of wildlife in its National Park, Sanctuary and Zoological Park. The first elephant reserve of India was established in Singhbhum region of the state.


In the state Jharkhand has many wildlife sanctuaries and one National Park located. You can go for full of adventures and discovering wildlife in these Sanctuaries & National Park. There are 11 Wildlife sanctuaries including one bird sanctuary.

National Park

Betla National Park is located in Latehar district of state Jharkhand. It was established in 1986. It is cover an area of 231.67 sq km.


It is designated by govt. in order to protect and conserve its special features and in some case its historical associations, for public enjoyment and scientific purposes. The tiger project was started by the Indian govt. here since 1973.

                 

The prominent animals found in this National park of Jharkhand are tiger, lion, elephant, cheetah, bear, chinkara, gaur, monkey, peacock etc.

Wildlife Sanctuary of Jharkhand 

1. Hazaribag Wildlife Sanctuary

In the district Hazaribag. A Wildlife Sanctuary, which is located 22 km away from the main city. It was established in 1976.             



It is the oldest Wildlife sanctuary of Jharkhand. Its cover an area of 186.25 sq km. The Sanctuary has rich fauna such as Nilgai, Cheetal, Peafowl, sloth bears, black bear, hyenas and pigeons.

2. Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary

It is located around the Dalma hills, 10km from Jamshedpur city in the state Jharkhand.                                                                                                   

             

It was established in the year 1976. It covers an area of 193.22 sq km. The Wildlife sanctuary is surrounded by Dalma hills.

Its offers shelter to elephant, barking deer, sloth bear, porcupines, leopard and wild boars as the major inhabitats. The elephant project was started here.

3. Gautam Buddha Wildlife Sanctuary

Its located in Koderma. It was established in 1976. It covers an area of 121.14 sq km. It has variety of animals and birds.                      


The prominent wildlife species found here are tiger, elephant, leopard, cheetah, barking deer, nilgai, wild boar, hyena and langur. In this wildlife sanctuary has a variety of birds species can also be found find here such as hoopoe, bee-eater, jungle myna, red vented bulbul, black headed oriole, barbet, pied kingfisher, etc.

4. Mahuadanr Wildlife Sanctuary

It is located in latehar district of Jharkhand. It was established in 1976. It covers an area of 63.26 sq km                                                    



The sanctuary has many wolf species along with spotted deer, wild boar, hare, mongoose, rats, squirrels and ground birds.

5. Palamu Wildlife Sanctuary

Jharkhand largest wildlife sanctuary located in Latehar district established in 1976. Its cover an area of 752.94 sq km. Palamu sanctuary found here are elephant and tigers,deer, monkey and langur etc.

                   




The prominent wildlife species found here are tiger, leopard, cheetah, barking deer, nilgai, wild boar, hyena and langur.

It is a tiger reserve sanctuary.

6. Lawalong Wildlife Sanctuary

It is located in Chatra district established in 1978 with an area cover around 211.03 sq km. It has variety of flora and fauna.                                                                                                                      


The prominent wildlife species found here are tiger, leopard, cheetah, barking deer, nilgai, wild boar, hyena and langur. In this wildlife sanctuary has a variety of birds species can also be found find here such as hoopoe, bee-eater, jungle myna, red vented bulbul, black headed oriole, barbet, pied kingfisher, etc.

7. Topchanchi Wildlife Sanctuary

It is located in at the foot hill of majestic Parsanath at the distance of 35 km to the west Dhanbad town. It was establish in 1978. Its cover an area 12.82 sq km. It is also link with Koderma, Hazaribagh and Chatra district.

The type forest prevailing in the sanctuary is dry mixed  deciduous with dry peninsular sal .

The prominent wildlife species found here leopard, wild boar, barking deer, hare, spotted deer, porcupine, jackal, fox, hyena, common langur etc. Lalsar and peocock are important birds of this sanctuary.

8. Parasnath Wildlife Sanctuary

It is located in Giridih district of Jharkhand and about 25 km away from town. It was established in 1984. It has an area cover of 49.33 sq km.           

The prominent wildlife species found here leopard, barking deer, spotted deer, langur, monkey, wild bear, jackal, hyaena, hare porcupine, jungle cat etc.

 



 Important birds are peafowl, parakeet, cuckoo etc in this sanctuary.

 

9. Koderma Wildlife Sanctuary

It is located in Koderma district of Jharkhand. It was established in 1985. It has an area cover of 177.35 sq km.                                                         

This sanctuary has rich fauna such as sloth bear, sabar, cheetah, barking deer, langur, monkey, hyena, jackal, wild boar, leopard etc.

        

Important birds are bulbul, Indian grey hornbill, rose ring parakeet, peafowl, parakeet, cuckoo etc.

 

10. Palkot Wildlife Sanctuary

It is located in Gumla district of Jharkhand. It was established in 1990. It has an area cover of 182.83 sq km.

The type forest prevailing in the sanctuary is dry mixed  deciduous with dry peninsular sal .                                                                                    

     

        

The prominent wildlife species found here leopard, wild boar, barking deer, hare, spotted deer, porcupine, jackal, fox, hyena, common langur etc.           
Lalsar and peocock koel(state bird),owl, pheasants are important birds of this sanctuary.

11. Udhwa Lake Birds Sanctuary 

It is located in Sahibganj district at 10km from Rajmahal of Jharkhand. It was established in 1991. It has an area cover of 5.65 sq km.

   
   

The important birds are kingfisher, gulls, teal, darter, wagtail, egret, heron, hawk, vulture, swift swallow, lalsar and peacock, koel(state bird),owl, pheasants are important birds of this sanctuary.
